           ‘Comein,’saidaman’svoice,inreplytoSam’srapatthedoor.Sammadehisbestbow,andsteppedintothepresenceofaladyandgentlemanseatedatbreakfast.Havingofficiouslydepositedthegentleman’sbootsrightandleftathisfeet,andthelady’sshoesrightandleftathers,hebackedtowardsthedoor.

           ‘Boots,’saidthegentleman.

           ‘Sir,’saidSam,closingthedoor,andkeepinghishandontheknobofthelock.‘Doyouknowwhat’sa-nameDoctors’Commons?’

           ‘Yes,Sir.’

           ‘Whereisit?’

           ‘Paul’sChurchyard,Sir;lowarchwayonthecarriageside,bookseller’satonecorner,hot-elontheother,andtwoportersinthemiddleastoutsforlicences.’

           ‘Toutsforlicences!’saidthegentleman.
