           Mr.Pickwickwassufficientlyversedinthestranger’ssystemofstenographytoinferfromthisrapidanddisjointedcommunicationthathehad,somehoworother,contractedanacquaintancewiththeAll–Muggletons,whichhehadconverted,byaprocesspeculiartohimself,intothatextentofgood-fellowshiponwhichageneralinvitationmaybeeasilyfounded.Hiscuriositywasthereforesatisfied,andputtingonhisspectacleshepreparedhimselftowatchtheplaywhichwasjustcommencing.

           All–Muggletonhadthefirstinnings;andtheinterestbecameintensewhenMr.DumkinsandMr.Podder,twoofthemostrenownedmembersofthatmostdistinguishedclub,walked,batinhand,totheirrespectivewickets.Mr.Luffey,thehighestornamentofDingleyDell,waspitchedtobowlagainsttheredoubtableDumkins,andMr.StruggleswasselectedtodothesamekindofficeforthehithertounconqueredPodder.Severalplayerswerestationed,to‘lookout,’indifferentpartsofthefield,andeachfixedhimselfintotheproperattitudebyplacingonehandoneachknee,andstoopingverymuchasifhewere‘makingaback’forsomebeginneratleap-frog.
