           ‘Nomanknowshowmuchhecanspend,tillhetries,’observedMr.Weller.

           ‘Perhapsnot,’repliedMr.Pickwick;‘butasIhavenointentionoftryinganysuchexperiments,Iamnotlikelytocometowant.Imustbegyoutotakethisback,Mr.Weller.’‘Werywell,’saidMr.Weller,withadiscontentedlook.‘Markmyvords,Sammy,I’lldosomethin’desperateviththishereproperty;somethin’desperate!’

           ‘You’dbetternot,’repliedSam.

           Mr.Wellerreflectedforashorttime,andthen,buttoninguphiscoatwithgreatdetermination,said

           ‘I’llkeepapike.’

           ‘Wot!’exclaimedSam.

           ‘Apike!’rejoinedMr.Weller,throughhissetteeth;‘I’llkeepapike.Saygood-byetoyourfather,Samivel.Idewotetheremainderofmydaystoapike.’

           Thisthreatwassuchanawfulone,andMr.Weller,besidesappearingfullyresolvedtocarryitintoexecution,seemedsodeeplymortifiedbyMr.Pickwick’srefusal,thatthatgentleman,afterashortreflection,said

           ‘Well,well,Mr.Weller,Iwillkeepyourmoney.Icandomoregoodwithit,perhaps,thanyoucan.
