Mr. Solomon Pell, assisted by a Select Committee of Coachmen, arranges the affairs of the elder Mr.

           

           Atlengthalltheseweightymattersbeingarranged,adaywasfixedforsellingoutandtransferringthestock,andofwaitingwiththatviewuponWilkinsFlasher,Esquire,stock-broker,ofsomewherenearthebank,whohadbeenrecommendedbyMr.SolomonPellforthepurpose.

           Itwasakindoffestiveoccasion,andthepartieswereattiredaccordingly.Mr.Weller’stopswerenewlycleaned,andhisdresswasarrangedwithpeculiarcare;themottled-facedgentlemanworeathisbutton-holeafull-sizeddahliawithseveralleaves;andthecoatsofhistwofriendswereadornedwithnosegaysoflaurelandotherevergreens.Allthreewerehabitedinstrictholidaycostume;thatistosay,theywerewrappeduptothechins,andworeasmanyclothesaspossible,whichis,andhasbeen,astage-coachman’sideaoffulldresseversincestage-coacheswereinvented.

           Mr.Pellwaswaitingattheusualplaceofmeetingattheappointedtime;evenheworeapairofglovesandacleanshirt,muchfrayedatthecollarandwristbandsbyfrequentwashings.

           ‘Aquartertotwo,’saidPell,lookingattheparlourclock.‘IfwearewithMr.Flasherataquarterpast,weshalljusthitthebesttime.’

           ‘Whatshouldyousaytoadropo’beer,gen’l’m’n?’suggestedthemottled-facedman.‘Andalittlebito’coldbeef,’saidthesecondcoachman.

           ‘Oraoyster,’addedthethird,whowasahoarsegentleman,supportedbyveryroundlegs.
