           ‘What’sthematter?’inquiredWardle.

           ‘Thisissuchanextremelysingularlad!’repliedMr.Pickwick,lookinguneasilyattheboy.‘Itseemsanoddthingtosay,butuponmywordIamafraidthat,attimes,heisalittlederanged.’

           ‘Oh!Mr.Pickwick,praydon’tsayso,’criedEmilyandArabella,bothatonce.

           ‘Iamnotcertain,ofcourse,’saidMr.Pickwick,amidstprofoundsilenceandlooksofgeneraldismay;‘buthismannertomethismomentreallywasveryalarming.Oh!’ejaculatedMr.Pickwick,suddenlyjumpingupwithashortscream.‘Ibegyourpardon,ladies,butatthatmomentheransomesharpinstrumentintomyleg.Really,heisnotsafe.’

           ‘He’sdrunk,’roaredoldWardlepassionately.‘Ringthebell!Callthewaiters!He’sdrunk.’

           ‘Iain’t,’saidthefatboy,fallingonhiskneesashismasterseizedhimbythecollar.‘Iain’tdrunk.’

           ‘Thenyou’remad;that’sworse.
