ThefatboyassistedMarytoalittle,andhimselftoagreatdeal,andwasjustgoingtobegineatingwhenhesuddenlylaiddownhisknifeandfork,leanedforwardinhischair,andlettinghishands,withtheknifeandforkinthem,fallonhisknees,said,veryslowly—
‘Isay!Howniceyoulook!’
Thiswassaidinanadmiringmanner,andwas,sofar,gratifying;butstilltherewasenoughofthecannibalintheyounggentleman’seyestorenderthecomplimentadoubleone.
‘Dearme,Joseph,’saidMary,affectingtoblush,‘whatdoyoumean?’
Thefatboy,graduallyrecoveringhisformerposition,repliedwithaheavysigh,and,remainingthoughtfulforafewmoments,drankalongdraughtoftheporter.Havingachievedthisfeat,hesighedagain,andappliedhimselfassiduouslytothepie.
‘WhataniceyoungladyMissEmilyis!’saidMary,afteralongsilence.
Thefatboyhadbythistimefinishedthepie.HefixedhiseyesonMary,andreplied—‘Iknowsanicerer.’
‘Indeed!’saidMary.
‘Yes,indeed!’repliedthefatboy,withunwontedvivacity.
‘What’shername?’inquiredMary.
‘What’syours?’
