BothMr.BobSawyerandMr.BenAllenhadbeheldthesesymptomsofrivalryandhatred,withadegreeofdelightwhichimpartedgreatadditionalrelishtothecigarsatwhichtheywerepuffingmostvigorously.Themomenttheybegantoflag,themischievousMr.BobSawyer,addressingSlurkwithgreatpoliteness,said—
‘Willyouallowmetolookatyourpaper,Sir,whenyouhavequitedonewithit?’
‘YouwillfindverylittletorepayyouforyourtroubleinthiscontemptibleTHING,sir,’repliedSlurk,bestowingaSatanicfrownonPott.
‘Youshallhavethispresently,’saidPott,lookingup,palewithrage,andquiveringinhisspeech,fromthesamecause.‘Ha!ha!youwillbeamusedwiththisFELLOW’Saudacity.’
Terribleemphasiswaslaidupon‘thing’and‘fellow’;andthefacesofbotheditorsbegantoglowwithdefiance.
