SolongastheirprogresswasconfinedtothestreetsofBristol,thefacetiousBobkepthisprofessionalgreenspectacleson,andconductedhimselfwithbecomingsteadinessandgravityofdemeanour;merelygivingutterancetodiversverbalwitticismsfortheexclusivebehoofandentertainmentofMr.SamuelWeller.Butwhentheyemergedontheopenroad,hethrewoffhisgreenspectaclesandhisgravitytogether,andperformedagreatvarietyofpracticaljokes,whichwerecalculatedtoattracttheattentionofthepassersby,andtorenderthecarriageandthoseitcontainedobjectsofmorethanordinarycuriosity;theleastconspicuousamongthesefeatsbeingamostvociferousimitationofakey-bugle,andtheostentatiousdisplayofacrimsonsilkpocket-handkerchiefattachedtoawalking-stick,whichwasoccasionallywavedintheairwithvariousgesturesindicativeofsupremacyanddefiance.
