Mr.Martin,whowasamanoffewwordsandpossessedbutlittlepowerofeloquenceorpersuasion,submittedtothisoperationwithaverycalmandagreeableexpressionofcountenance,forsomeseconds;finding,however,thatitthreatenedspeedilytoleadtoaresultwhichwouldplaceitbeyondhispowertoclaimanywages,boardorotherwise,inalltimetocome,hemutteredaninarticulateremonstranceandfelledMr.BenjaminAllentotheground.Asthatgentlemanhadhishandsentangledinhiscravat,hehadnoalternativebuttofollowhimtothefloor.Theretheybothlaystruggling,whentheshopdooropened,andthepartywasincreasedbythearrivaloftwomostunexpectedvisitors,towit,Mr.PickwickandMr.SamuelWeller.
TheimpressionatonceproducedonMr.Weller’smindbywhathesaw,was,thatMr.MartinwashiredbytheestablishmentofSawyer,lateNockemorf,totakestrongmedicine,ortogointofitsandbeexperimentalisedupon,ortoswallowpoisonnowandthenwiththeviewoftestingtheefficacyofsomenewantidotes,ortodosomethingorothertopromotethegreatscienceofmedicine,andgratifytheardentspiritofinquiryburninginthebosomsofitstwoyoungprofessors.
