           Mr.Pickwickpaid,thedoorwasunbolted,andouttheycame;theuncombedgentlemanbestowingafriendlynoduponMr.Roker,whohappenedtobepassingatthemoment.

           Fromthisspot,Mr.Pickwickwanderedalongallthegalleries,upanddownallthestaircases,andonceagainroundthewholeareaoftheyard.ThegreatbodyoftheprisonpopulationappearedtobeMivins,andSmangle,andtheparson,andthebutcher,andtheleg,overandover,andoveragain.Therewerethesamesqualor,thesameturmoilandnoise,thesamegeneralcharacteristics,ineverycorner;inthebestandtheworstalike.Thewholeplaceseemedrestlessandtroubled;andthepeoplewerecrowdingandflittingtoandfro,liketheshadowsinanuneasydream.

           ‘Ihaveseenenough,’saidMr.Pickwick,ashethrewhimselfintoachairinhislittleapartment.‘Myheadacheswiththesescenes,andmyhearttoo.HenceforthIwillbeaprisonerinmyownroom.’
