Mr.Pickwickwastheverypersonationofkindnessandhumanity:hethrewthereinsonthehorse’sback,andhavingdescendedfromhisseat,carefullydrewthechaiseintothehedge,lestanythingshouldcomealongtheroad,andsteppedbacktotheassistanceofhisdistressedcompanion,leavingMr.TupmanandMr.Snodgrassinthevehicle.
ThehorsenosoonerbeheldMr.Pickwickadvancingtowardshimwiththechaisewhipinhishand,thanheexchangedtherotarymotioninwhichhehadpreviouslyindulged,foraretrogrademovementofsoverydeterminedacharacter,thatitatoncedrewMr.Winkle,whowasstillattheendofthebridle,ataratherquickerratethanfastwalking,inthedirectionfromwhichtheyhadjustcome.Mr.Pickwickrantohisassistance,butthefasterMr.Pickwickranforward,thefasterthehorseranbackward.Therewasagreatscrapingoffeet,andkickingupofthedust;andatlastMr.Winkle,hisarmsbeingnearlypulledoutoftheirsockets,fairlyletgohishold.Thehorsepaused,stared,shookhishead,turnedround,andquietlytrottedhometoRochester,leavingMr.WinkleandMr.Pickwickgazingoneachotherwithcountenancesofblankdismay.Arattlingnoiseatalittledistanceattractedtheirattention.Theylookedup.
‘Blessmysoul!’exclaimedtheagonisedMr.Pickwick;‘there’stheotherhorserunningaway!’
