           Theboatlostheadway,and,asweliftedonahugesurge,toppledandfellintothetrough.

           Thentheyweregoneastern.Thespritsailfilledwiththewind,suddenly,careeningthefrailopencrafttillitseemeditwouldsurelycapsize.Awhitecapfoamedaboveitandbrokeacrossinasnow-whitesmother.Thentheboatemerged,halfswamped,LeachflingingthewateroutandJohnsonclingingtothesteering-oar,hisfacewhiteandanxious.

           WolfLarsenbarkedashortlaughinmyearandstrodeawaytotheweathersideofthepoop.IexpectedhimtogiveordersfortheGhosttoheaveto,butshekeptonhercourseandhemadenosign.Louisstoodimperturbablyatthewheel,butInoticedthegroupedsailorsforwardturningtroubledfacesinourdirection.
