           “Sistershouldreadtherulesoutsidethedoor.”

           Thelittlenursewithdrew,andCynthiapromptlytookajarfromtheshelf,refilledthebottle,andplaceditonthetableoutsidethedoor.

           Ilaughed.

           “Disciplinemustbemaintained?”

           “Exactly.Comeoutonourlittlebalcony.Youcanseealltheoutsidewardsthere.”

           IfollowedCynthiaandherfriendandtheypointedoutthedifferentwardstome.Lawrenceremainedbehind,butafterafewmomentsCynthiacalledtohimoverhershouldertocomeandjoinus.Thenshelookedatherwatch.

           “Nothingmoretodo,Nibs?”

           “No.”

           “Allright.Thenwecanlockupandgo.”

           IhadseenLawrenceinquiteadifferentlightthatafternoon.ComparedtoJohn,hewasanastoundinglydifficultpersontogettoknow.Hewastheoppositeofhisbrotherinalmosteveryrespect,beingunusuallyshyandreserved.Yethehadacertaincharmofmanner,andIfanciedthat,ifonereallyknewhimwell,onecouldhaveadeepaffectionforhim.IhadalwaysfanciedthathismannertoCynthiawasratherconstrained,andthatsheonhersidewasinclinedtobeshyofhim.
