           Wehadaverycheerytea,andassistedCynthiatowashupafterwards.Wehadjustputawaythelasttea-spoonwhenaknockcameatthedoor.ThecountenancesofCynthiaandNibsweresuddenlypetrifiedintoasternandforbiddingexpression.

           “Comein,”saidCynthia,inasharpprofessionaltone.

           AyoungandratherscaredlookingnurseappearedwithabottlewhichsheprofferedtoNibs,whowavedhertowardsCynthiawiththesomewhatenigmaticalremark:

           “I’mnotreallyhereto-day.”

           Cynthiatookthebottleandexamineditwiththeseverityofajudge.

           “Thisshouldhavebeensentupthismorning.”
