Thereisasundialinitscourtyard,bywhichtheCounciloftheHomecantellthehoursofthedayandwhentoringthebell.Whenthebellrings,weallarisefromourbeds.Theskyisgreenandcoldinourwindowstotheeast.Theshadowonthesundialmarksoffahalf-hourwhilewedressandeatourbreakfastinthedininghall,wheretherearefivelongtableswithtwentyclayplatesandtwentyclaycupsoneachtable.ThenwegotoworkinthestreetsoftheCity,withourbroomsandourrakes.Infivehours,whenthesunishigh,wereturntotheHomeandweeatourmiddaymeal,forwhichone-halfhourisallowed.Thenwegotoworkagain.Infivehours,theshadowsareblueonthepavements,andtheskyisbluewithadeepbrightnesswhichisnotbright.Wecomebacktohaveourdinner,whichlastsonehour.ThenthebellringsandwewalkinastraightcolumntooneoftheCityHalls,fortheSocialMeeting.OthercolumnsofmenarrivefromtheHomesofthedifferentTrades.Thecandlesarelit,andtheCouncilsofthedifferentHomesstandinapulpit,andtheyspeaktousofourdutiesandofourbrothermen.ThenvisitingLeadersmountthepulpitandtheyreadtousthespeecheswhichweremadeintheCityCouncilthatday,fortheCityCouncilrepresentsallmenandallmenmustknow.Thenwesinghymns,theHymnofBrotherhood,andtheHymnofEquality,andtheHymnoftheCollectiveSpirit.TheskyisasoggypurplewhenwereturntotheHome.ThenthebellringsandwewalkinastraightcolumntotheCityTheatreforthreehoursofSocialRecreation.
