Wewisheditsomuchthatourhandstrembledundertheblanketsinthenight,andwebitourarmtostopthatotherpainwhichwecouldnotendure.Itwasevilandwedarednotfaceourbrothersinthemorning.Formenmaywishnothingforthemselves.AndwewerepunishedwhentheCouncilofVocationscametogiveusourlifeMandateswhichtellthosewhoreachtheirfifteenthyearwhattheirworkistobefortherestoftheirdays.
TheCouncilofVocationscameonthefirstdayofspring,andtheysatinthegreathall.AndwewhowerefifteenandalltheTeacherscameintothegreathall.AndtheCouncilofVocationssatonahighdais,andtheyhadbuttwowordstospeaktoeachoftheStudents.TheycalledtheStudents’names,andwhentheStudentssteppedbeforethem,oneafteranother,theCouncilsaid:“Carpenter”or“Doctor”or“Cook”or“Leader.”TheneachStudentraisedtheirrightarmandsaid:“Thewillofourbrothersbedone.”
NowiftheCouncilhassaid“Carpenter”or“Cook,”theStudentssoassignedgotoworkandtheydonotstudyanyfurther.ButiftheCouncilhassaid“Leader,”thenthoseStudentsgointotheHomeoftheLeaders,whichisthegreatesthouseintheCity,forithasthreestories.Andtheretheystudyformanyyears,sothattheymaybecomecandidatesandbeelectedtotheCityCouncilandtheStateCouncilandtheWorldCouncil—byafreeandgeneralvoteofallmen.ButwewishednottobeaLeader,eventhoughitisagreathonor.WewishedtobeaScholar.
