           TwicehavewebeensenttothePalaceofMating,butitisanuglyandshamefulmatter,ofwhichwedonotliketothink.

           Theotherwomenwerefaroffinthefield,whenwestoppedatthehedgebythesideoftheroad.TheGoldenOnewerekneelingaloneatthemoatwhichrunsthroughthefield.Andthedropsofwaterfallingfromtheirhands,astheyraisedthewatertotheirlips,werelikesparksoffireinthesun.ThentheGoldenOnesawus,andtheydidnotmove,kneelingthere,lookingatus,andcirclesoflightplayedupontheirwhitetunic,fromthesunonthewaterofthemoat,andonesparklingdropfellfromafingeroftheirhandheldasfrozenintheair.

           ThentheGoldenOneroseandwalkedtothehedge,asiftheyhadheardacommandinoureyes.ThetwootherStreetSweepersofourbrigadewereahundredpacesawaydowntheroad.AndwethoughtthatInternational4-8818wouldnotbetrayus,andUnion5-3992wouldnotunderstand.SowelookedstraightupontheGoldenOne,andwesawtheshadowsoftheirlashesontheirwhitecheeksandthesparksofsunontheirlips.Andwesaid:

           “Youarebeautiful,Liberty5-3000.”

           Theirfacedidnotmoveandtheydidnotaverttheireyes.Onlytheireyesgrewwider,andtherewastriumphintheireyes,anditwasnottriumphoverus,butoverthingswecouldnotguess.

           Thentheyasked:

           “Whatisyourname?”

           “Equality7-2521,”weanswered.

           “Youarenotoneofourbrothers,Equality7-2521,forwedonotwishyoutobe.
