           Herfather,ofcourse,wasstartledoutofhischairandthetwoparentslookedonastonishedandhelpless;thenthey,too,becameagitated;Gregor’sfather,standingtotherightofhismother,accusedherofnotleavingthecleaningofGregor’sroomtohissister;fromherleft,Gregor’ssisterscreamedatherthatshewasnevertocleanGregor’sroomagain;whilehismothertriedtodrawhisfather,whowasbesidehimselfwithanger,intothebedroom;hissister,quakingwithtears,thumpedonthetablewithhersmallfists;andGregorhissedinangerthatno-onehadeventhoughtofclosingthedoortosavehimthesightofthisandallitsnoise.

           Gregor’ssisterwasexhaustedfromgoingouttowork,andlookingafterGregorasshehaddonebeforewasevenmoreworkforher,butevensohismotheroughtcertainlynottohavetakenherplace.Gregor,ontheotherhand,oughtnottobeneglected.Now,though,thecharwomanwashere.Thiselderlywidow,witharobustbonestructurethatmadeherabletowithstandthehardestofthingsinherlonglife,wasn’treallyrepelledbyGregor.Justbychanceoneday,ratherthananyrealcuriosity,sheopenedthedoortoGregor’sroomandfoundherselffacetofacewithhim.Hewastakentotallybysurprise,no-onewaschasinghimbuthebegantorushtoandfrowhileshejuststoodthereinamazementwithherhandscrossedinfrontofher.Fromthenonsheneverfailedtoopenthedoorslightlyeveryeveningandmorningandlookbrieflyinonhim.
