           Gregor’ssisternolongerthoughtabouthowshecouldpleasehimbutwouldhurriedlypushsomefoodorotherintohisroomwithherfootbeforesherushedouttoworkinthemorningandatmidday,andintheeveningshewouldsweepitawayagainwiththebroom,indifferentastowhetherithadbeeneatenor—moreoftenthannot—hadbeenlefttotallyuntouched.Shestillcleareduptheroomintheevening,butnowshecouldnothavebeenanyquickeraboutit.Smearsofdirtwereleftonthewalls,hereandtherewerelittleballsofdustandfilth.Atfirst,Gregorwentintooneoftheworstoftheseplaceswhenhissisterarrivedasareproachtoher,buthecouldhavestayedthereforweekswithouthissisterdoinganythingaboutit;shecouldseethedirtaswellashecouldbutshehadsimplydecidedtoleavehimtoit.Atthesametimeshebecametouchyinawaythatwasquitenewforherandwhicheveryoneinthefamilyunderstood—cleaningupGregor’sroomwasforherandheralone.Gregor’smotherdidoncethoroughlycleanhisroom,andneededtouseseveralbucketfulsofwatertodoit—althoughthatmuchdampnessalsomadeGregorillandhelayflatonthecouch,bitterandimmobile.Buthismotherwastobepunishedstillmoreforwhatshehaddone,ashardlyhadhissisterarrivedhomeintheeveningthanshenoticedthechangeinGregor’sroomand,highlyaggrieved,ranbackintothelivingroomwhere,despitehermothersraisedandimploringhands,shebrokeintoconvulsivetears.
