           AllthroughthespringAmoryhadkeptupanintermittentcorrespondencewithIsabelleBorge,punctuatedbyviolentsquabblesandchieflyenlivenedbyhisattemptstofindnewwordsforlove.HediscoveredIsabelletobediscreetlyandaggravatinglyunsentimentalinletters,buthehopedagainsthopethatshewouldprovenottooexoticabloomtofitthelargespacesofspringasshehadfittedthedenintheMinnehahaClub.DuringMayhewrotethirty-pagedocumentsalmostnightly,andsentthemtoherinbulkyenvelopesexteriorlylabelled"PartI"and"PartII."
