           "That’sgood,"Kerrywouldsaysoftly."ItpleasestheelderHoliday.That’sagreatpoet,Iguess."Tom,delightedatanaudience,wouldramblethroughthe"PoemsandBallades"untilKerryandAmoryknewthemalmostaswellashe.

           Amorytooktowritingpoetryonspringafternoons,inthegardensofthebigestatesnearPrinceton,whileswansmadeeffectiveatmosphereintheartificialpools,andslowcloudssailedharmoniouslyabovethewillows.Maycametoosoon,andsuddenlyunabletobearwalls,hewanderedthecampusatallhoursthroughstarlightandrain.

           ADAMPSYMBOLICINTERLUDE

           Thenightmistfell.Fromthemoonitrolled,clusteredaboutthespiresandtowers,andthensettledbelowthem,sothatthedreamingpeakswerestillinloftyaspirationtowardthesky.Figuresthatdottedthedaylikeantsnowbrushedalongasshadowyghosts,inandoutoftheforeground.TheGothichallsandcloisterswereinfinitelymoremysteriousastheyloomedsuddenlyoutofthedarkness,outlinedeachbymyriadfaintsquaresofyellowlight.
