Burne,fair-haired,silent,andintent,appearedinthehouseonlyasabusyapparition,glidinginquietlyatnightandoffagainintheearlymorningtogetuphisworkinthelibrary—hewasoutforthePrincetonian,competingfuriouslyagainstfortyothersforthecovetedfirstplace.InDecemberhecamedownwithdiphtheria,andsomeoneelsewonthecompetition,but,returningtocollegeinFebruary,hedauntlesslywentaftertheprizeagain.
