Afterthethirdshockwasover,andIfeltnomoreforsometime,Ibegantotakecourage;andyetIhadnotheartenoughtogoovermywallagain,forfearofbeingburiedalive,butsatstillupontheground,greatlycastdownanddisconsolate,notknowingwhattodo. AllthiswhileIhadnottheleastseriousreligiousthought,nothingbutthecommon, "Lord,havemercyuponme!" andwhenitwasover,thatwentawaytoo.
WhileIsatthus,Ifoundtheairovercast,andgrowcloudy,asifitwouldrain. Soonafterthatthewindrosebylittleandlittle,sothatinlessthanhalfanhouritblewamostdreadfulhurricane. Theseawasallonasuddencoveredoverwithfoamandfroth;theshorewascoveredwiththebreachofthewater;thetreesweretornupbytheroots; andaterriblestormitwas: andthisheldaboutthreehours,andthenbegantoabate;andintwohoursmoreitwasstarkcalm,andbegantorainveryhard.
AllthiswhileIsatupontheground,verymuchterrifiedanddejected;whenonasuddenitcameintomythoughts,thatthesewindsandrainbeingtheconsequencesoftheearthquake,theearthquakeitselfwasspentandover,andImightventureintomycaveagain. Withthisthoughtmyspiritsbegantorevive;andtherainalsohelpingtopersuademe,Iwentinandsatdowninmytent. Buttherainwassoviolentthatmytentwasreadytobebeatendownwithit,andIwasforcedtogointomycave,thoughverymuchafraidanduneasy,forfearitshouldfallonmyhead.
Thisviolentrainforcedmetoanewwork,viz., tocutaholethroughmynewfortification,likeasink,toletthewatergoout,whichwouldelsehavedrownedmycave. AfterIhadbeeninmycavesometime,andfoundstillnomoreshocksoftheearthquakefollow,Ibegantobemorecomposed.
