January1. —Veryhotstill,butIwentabroadearlyandlatewithmygun,andlaystillinthemiddleoftheday. Thisevening,goingfartherintothevalleyswhichlaytowardsthecentreoftheisland,Ifoundtherewasplentyofgoats,thoughexceedingshy,andhardtocomeat. However,IresolvedtotryifIcouldnotbringmydogtohuntthemdown.
January2. —Accordingly,thenextday,Iwentoutwithmydog,andsethimuponthegoats; butIwasmistaken,fortheyallfacedaboutuponthedog;andheknewhisdangertoowell,forhewouldnotcomenearthem.
January3. —Ibeganmyfenceorwall; whichbeingstilljealousofmybeingattackedbysomebody,Iresolvedtomakeverythickandstrong.

ItissufficienttoobservethatIwasnolesstimethanfromthe3rdofJanuarytothe14thofAprilworking,finishing,andperfectingthiswall,thoughitwasnomorethanabouttwenty-fouryardsinlength, beingahalfcirclefromoneplaceintherocktoanotherplaceabouteightyardsfromit,thedoorofthecavebeinginthecentrebehindit.
AllthistimeIworkedveryhard,therainshinderingmemanydays,nay,sometimesweekstogether;butIthoughtIshouldneverbeperfectlysecuretillthiswallwasfinished. Anditisscarcecrediblewhatinexpressiblelaboreverythingwasdonewith,especiallythebringingpilesofthewoods,anddrivingthemintotheground;forImadethemmuchbiggerthanIneedtohavedone.
