           Wehadverygoodweather,onlyexcessivehot,allthewayuponourowncoast,tillwecametheheightofCapeSt.Augustino, fromwhence,keepingfartheroffatsea,welostsightofland,andsteeredasifwewasboundfortheIsleFernandodeNoronha,holdingourcourseNE.byN.,andleavingthoseislesontheeast. Inthiscoursewepassedthelineinabouttwelvedays’time,andwere,byourlastobservation,in7degrees22minutesnorthernlatitude,whenaviolenttornado,orhurricane,tookusquiteoutofourknowledge. Itbeganfromthesouth-east,cameabouttothenorth-west,andthensettledintothenorth-east,fromwhenceitblewinsuchaterriblemanner,thatfortwelvedaystogetherwecoulddonothingbutdrive,and,scuddingawaybeforeit,letitcarryuswhereverfateandthefuryofthewindsdirected; andduringthesetwelvedaysIneednotsaythatIexpectedeverydaytobeswallowedup,nor,indeed,didanyintheshipexpecttosavetheirlives. 

           Inthisdistresswehad,besidestheterrorofthestorm,oneofourmendiedofthecalenture,andonemanandtheboywashedoverboard. Aboutthetwelfthday,theweatherabatingalittle,themastermadeanobservationaswellashecould, andfoundthathewasinabout11degreesnorthlatitude,butthathewas22degreesoflongitudedifferencewestfromCapeSt.Augustino; sothathefoundhewasgottenuponthecoastofGuiana,orthenorthpartofBrazil,beyondtheriverAmazon,towardthatoftheRiverOrinoco,commonlycalledtheGreatRiver, andbegantoconsultwithmewhatcourseheshouldtake,fortheshipwasleakyandverymuchdisabled,andhewasgoingdirectlybacktothecoastofBrazil.
