Thenightwascomingon,andthelightbegantobedusky,whichmadeitworseonourside; butthenoiseincreasing,wecouldeasilyperceivethatitwasthehowlingandyellingofthosehellishcreatures; andonasudden,weperceivedtwoorthreetroopsofwolves,oneonourleft,onebehindus,andoneonourfront,sothatweseemedtobesurroundedwiththem. However,astheydidnotfalluponuswekeptourwayforwardasfastaswecouldmakeourhorsesgo,which,thewaybeingveryrough,wasonlyagoodlargetrot,andinthismannerwecameinviewoftheofawood,thoughwhichweweretopass,atthefarthersideoftheplain; butweweregreatlysurprisedwhen,comingnearerthelane,orpass,wesawaconfusednumberofwolvesstandingjustattheentrance.
Onasudden,atanotheropeningofthewood,weheardthenoiseofagun,andlookingthatway,outrushedahorse,withasaddleandabridleonhim,flyinglikethewind,andsixteenorseventeenwolvesafterhim,fullspeed; indeed,thehorsehadtheheelsofthem; butaswesupposedthathecouldnotholditatthatrate,wedoubtednotbuttheywouldgetupwithhimatlast,andnoquestionbuttheydid.
Butherewehadamosthorriblesight; forridinguptotheentrancewherethehorsecameout,wefoundthecarcassofanotherhorseandoftwomen,devouredbytheravenouscreatures; andoneofthemenwasnodoubtthatsamewhomweheardfirethegun,fortherelayagunjustbyhimfiredoff; butastotheman,hisheadandtheupperpartofhisbodywaseatenup.
