Fight Between Friday and a Bear

           And,indeed,sohedid,asyouwillseepresently; forwhenthebearseeshisenemygone,hecomesbackfromtheboughwherehestood,butdiditmightyleisurely,lookingbehindhimeverystep,andcomingbackwardtillhegotintothebodyofthetree; thenwiththesamehinderendforemosthecomesdownthetree,graspingitwithhisclaws,andmovingonefootatatime,veryleisurely. Atthisjuncture,andjustbeforehecouldsethishindfeetupontheground,Fridaysteppedupclosetohim,clappedthemuzzleofhispieceintohisear,andshothimdeadasastone. 

           Thentherogueturnedabouttoseeifwedidnotlaugh;andwhenhesawwewerepleasedbyourlooks,hefallsa-laughinghimselfveryloud. "Sowekillbearinmycountry,"saysFriday. "Soyoukillthem?"saysI;"why,youhavenoguns." "No,"sayshe,"nogun,butshootgreatmuchlongarrow." 

           Thiswasindeedagooddiversiontous;butwewerestillinawildplace,andourguideverymuchhurt,andwhattodowehardlyknew. Thehowlingofthewolvesranmuchinmyhead; andindeed,exceptthenoiseIonceheardontheshoreofAfrica,ofwhichIhavesaidsomethingalready,Ineverheardanythingthatfilledmewithsomuchhorror. 

           Thesethings,andtheapproachofnight,calledusoff,orelse,asFridaywouldhavehadus,weshouldcertainlyhavetakentheskinofthismonstrouscreatureoff,whichwasworthsaving; butwehadthreeleaguestogo,andourguidehastenedus; sowelefthim,andwentforwardonourjourney. 

           Thegroundwasstillcoveredwithsnow,thoughnotsodeepanddangerousasonthemountains;
