AllthiswhileIkeptmyselfveryclose,notoncedaringtostiroutofmycastle,anyfartherthantomyplaceofobservationnearthetopofthehill; andverygladIwastothinkhowwellitwasfortified. Iknewitwasnolessthanoftenhoursbeforetheboatcouldbeonfloatagain,andbythattimeitwouldbedark,andImightbeatmorelibertytoseetheirmotions,andtoheartheirdiscourse,iftheyhadany.
Inthemeantime,Ifittedmyselfupforabattle,asbefore,thoughwithmorecaution,knowingIhadtodowithanotherkindofenemythanIhadatfirst. IorderedFridayalso,whomIhadanexcellentmarksmanwithhisgun,toloadhimselfwitharms. Itookmyselftwofowling-pieces,andIgavehimthreemuskets.Myfigure,indeed,wasveryfierce.Ihadmyformidablegoat-skincoaton,withthegreatcapIhavementioned,anakedswordbymyside,twopistolsinmybelt,andagunuponeachshoulder.
Itwasmydesign,asIsaidabove,nottohavemadeanyattempttillitwasdark; butabouttwoo’clock,beingtheheatoftheday,Ifoundthat,inshort,theywereallgonestragglingintothewoods,and,asIthought,werelaiddowntosleep. Thethreepoordistressedmen,tooanxiousfortheirconditiontogetanysleep,were,however,setdownundertheshelterofagreattree,ataboutaquarterofamilefromme,and,asIthought,outofsightofanyoftherest.
