AndnowhavingafullsupplyoffoodforalltheguestsIexpected,IgavetheSpaniardleavetogoovertothemain,toseewhathecoulddowiththosehehadleftbehindhimthere. Igavehimstrictchargeinwritingnottobringanymanwithhimwhowouldnotfirstswear,inthepresenceofhimselfandoftheoldsavage,thathewouldnowayinjure,fightwith,orattackthepersonheshouldfindintheisland,whowassokindtosendfortheminordertotheirdeliverance; butthattheywouldstandbyanddefendhimagainstallsuchattempts,andtheywentwouldbeentirelyunderandsubjectedtohiscommands; andthatthisshouldbeputinwriting,andsignedwiththeirhands. Howweweretohavethisdone,whenIknewtheyhadneitherpennorink,thatindeedwasaquestionwhichweneverasked.
Undertheseinstructions,theSpaniardandtheoldsavage,thefatherofFriday,wentawayinoneofthecanoeswhichtheymightbesaidtocomein,orratherwerebroughtin,whentheycameasprisonerstobedevouredbythesavages.
Igaveeachofthemamusket,withafirelockonit,andabouteightchargesofpowderandball,chargingthemtobeverygoodhusbandsofboth,andnottouseeitherofthembutuponurgentoccasion.
