Thiswasactingwithsomeprudence,andIwenttoworkwithcourage. Iwasaboutthreemonthshedginginthefirstpiece,and,tillIhaddoneit,Itetheredthethreekidsinthebestpartofit,andusedthemtofeedasnearmeaspossible,tomakethemfamiliar; andveryoftenIwouldgoandcarrythemsomeearsofbarley,orahandfulofrice,andfeedthemoutofmyhand; sothataftermyenclosurewasfinished,andIletthemloose,theywouldfollowmeupanddown,bleatingaftermeforahandfulofcorn.
Thisansweredmyend,andinaboutayearandahalfIhadaflockofabouttwelvegoats,kidsandall;andintwoyearsmoreIhadthreeandforty,besidesseveralthatItookandkilledformyfood. AndafterthatIenclosedfiveseveralpiecesofgroundtofeedthemin,andwithlittlepenstodrivetheminto,totakethemasIwanted,andgatesoutofonepieceofgroundintoanother.
