Butwhenthiswasworkedthrough,andthisdifficultymanaged,itwasstillmuchatone,forIcouldnomorestirthecanoethanIcouldtheotherboat.
Thenmeasuredthedistanceofground,andresolvedtocutadockorcanal,tobringthewateruptothecanoe,seeingIcouldnotbringthecanoedowntothewater. Well,Ibeganthiswork;andwhenIbegantoenterintoit,andcalculatehowdeepitwastobedug,howbroad,howthestufftobethrownout,IfoundthatbythenumberofhandsIhad,beingnonebutmyown,itmusthavebeenoftenortwelveyearsbeforeshouldhavegonethroughwithit; fortheshorelayhigh,sothatattheupperenditmusthavebeenatleasttwentyfeetdeep; soatlength,thoughwithgreatreluctancy,Igavethisattemptoveralso.
Thisgrievedmeheartily; andnowIsaw,thoughtoolate,thefollyofbeginningaworkbeforewecountthecost,and,beforewejudgerightlyofourownstrengthtogothroughwithit.
