           Afewmen(somefifteenorso),oftwenty-fivetoforty,scatteredhereandthereamongthedancersortalkingatthedoorways,distinguishedthemselvesfromthecrowdbyacertainairofbreeding,whatevertheirdifferencesinage,dress,orface.

           Theirclothes,bettermade,seemedoffinercloth,andtheirhair,broughtforwardincurlstowardsthetemples,glossywithmoredelicatepomades.Theyhadthecomplexionofwealththatclearcomplexionthatisheightenedbythepallorofporcelain,theshimmerofsatin,theveneerofoldfurniture,andthatanorderedregimenofexquisitenurturemaintainsatitsbest.Theirnecksmovedeasilyintheirlowcravats,theirlongwhiskersfellovertheirturned-downcollars,theywipedtheirlipsuponhandkerchiefswithembroideredinitialsthatgaveforthasubtleperfume.
