           Charlesknewnotwhattoanswer:herespectedhismother,andhelovedhiswifeinfinitely;heconsideredthejudgmentoftheoneinfallible,andyethethoughttheconductoftheotherirreproachable.WhenMadamBovaryhadgone,hetriedtimidlyandinthesametermstohazardoneortwoofthemoreanodyneobservationshehadheardfromhismamma.Emmaprovedtohimwithawordthathewasmistaken,andsenthimofftohispatients.

           Andyet,inaccordwiththeoriesshebelievedright,shewantedtomakeherselfinlovewithhim.Bymoonlightinthegardensherecitedallthepassionaterhymessheknewbyheart,and,sighing,sangtohimmanymelancholyadagios;butshefoundherselfascalmafterasbefore,andCharlesseemednomoreamorousandnomoremoved.

           Agamekeeper,curedbythedoctorofinflammationofthelungs,hadgivenmadamealittleItaliangreyhound;shetookheroutwalking,forshewentoutsometimesinordertobealoneforamoment,andnottoseebeforehereyestheeternalgardenandthedustyroad.
