Thefiercenessofhiscountenancenowseemedtoslumber,andinitsplacewastobeseenthequiet,vacantcomposure,whichdistinguishesanIndianwarrior,whenhisfacultiesarenotrequiredforanyofthegreaterpurposesofhisexistence.Itwas,however,easytobeseen,bytheoccasionalgleamsthatshotacrosshisswarthyvisage,thatitwasonlynecessarytoarousehispassions,inordertogivefulleffecttotheterrificdevicewhichhehadadoptedtointimidatehisenemies.Ontheotherhand,thequick,rovingeyeofthescoutseldomrested.Heateanddrankwithanappetitethatnosenseofdangercoulddisturb,buthisvigilanceseemednevertodeserthim.Twentytimesthegourdorthevenisonwassuspendedbeforehislips,whilehisheadwasturnedaside,asthoughhelistenedtosomedistantanddistrustedsounds—amovementthatneverfailedtorecallhisguestsfromregardingthenoveltiesoftheirsituation,toarecollectionofthealarmingreasonsthathaddriventhemtoseekit.Asthesefrequentpauseswereneverfollowedbyanyremark,themomentaryuneasinesstheycreatedquicklypassedaway,andforatimewasforgotten.
