           Butthetiewhich,throughtheircommoncalamity,hadunitedthefeelingsofthesesimpledwellersinthewoodswiththestrangerswhohadthustransientlyvisitedthem,wasnotsoeasilybroken.Yearspassedawaybeforethetraditionarytaleofthewhitemaiden,andoftheyoungwarrioroftheMohicans,ceasedtobeguilethelongnightsandtediousmarches,ortoanimatetheiryouthfulandbravewithadesireforvengeance.Neitherwerethesecondaryactorsinthesemomentousincidentsforgotten.Throughthemediumofthescout,whoservedforyearsafterwardsasalinkbetweenthemandcivilizedlife,theylearned,inanswertotheirinquiries,thatthe"GrayHead"wasspeedilygatheredtohisfathers—bornedown,aswaserroneouslybelieved,byhismilitarymisfortunes;andthatthe"OpenHand"hadconveyedhissurvivingdaughterfarintothesettlementsofthe"pale-faces,"wherehertearshadatlastceasedtoflow,andhadbeensucceededbythebrightsmileswhichwerebettersuitedtoherjoyousnature.
