Theonsetandtheissuewerelikethepassageanddestructionofawhirlwind.ThetomahawkofUncas,theblowsofHawkeye,andeventhestillnervousarmofMunro,wereallbusyforthatpassingmoment,andthegroundwasquicklystrewedwiththeirenemies.StillMagua,thoughdaringandmuchexposed,escapedfromeveryeffortagainsthislife,withthatsortoffabledprotectionthatwasmadetooverlookthefortunesoffavoredheroesinthelegendsofancientpoetry.Raisingayellthatspokevolumesofangeranddisappointment,thesubtlechief,whenhesawhiscomradesfallen,dartedawayfromtheplace,attendedbyhistwoonlysurvivingfriends,leavingtheDelawaresengagedinstrippingthedeadofthebloodytrophiesoftheirvictory.
ButUncas,whohadvainlysoughthimintheméléeboundedforwardinpursuit;Hawkeye,Heyward,andDavidstillpressingonhisfootsteps.Theutmostthatthescoutcouldeffect,wastokeepthemuzzleofhisriflealittleinadvanceofhisfriend,towhom,however,itansweredeverypurposeofacharmedshield.OnceMaguaappeareddisposedtomakeanotherandafinalefforttorevengehislosses;but,abandoninghisintentionassoonasdemonstrated,heleapedintoathicketofbushes,throughwhichhewasfollowedbyhisenemies,andsuddenlyenteredthemouthofthecavealreadyknowntothereader.Hawkeye,whohadonlyforbornetofireintendernesstoUncas,raisedashoutofsuccess,andproclaimedaloud,thatnowtheywerecertainoftheirgame.
