Ahundredyouths,whohadhithertobeenrestrainedbythediffidenceoftheiryears,rushedinafranticbodyonthefanciedemblemoftheirenemy,andsevereditasunder,splinterbysplinter,untilnothingremainedofthetrunkbutitsrootsintheearth.Duringthismomentoftumult,themostruthlessdeedsofwarwereperformedonthefragmentsofthetree,withasmuchapparentferocityasiftheywerethelivingvictimsoftheircruelty.Somewerescalped;somereceivedthekeenandtremblingaxe;andotherssufferedbythrustsfromthefatalknife.Inshort,themanifestationsofzealandfiercedelightweresogreatandunequivocal,thattheexpeditionwasdeclaredtobeawarofthenation.
TheinstantUncashadstrucktheblow,hemovedoutofthecircle,andcasthiseyesuptothesun,whichwasjustgainingthepoint,whenthetrucewithMaguawastoend.Thefactwassoonannouncedbyasignificantgesture,accompaniedbyacorrespondingcry;andthewholeoftheexcitedmultitudeabandonedtheirmimicwarfare,withshrillyellsofpleasure,toprepareforthemorehazardousexperimentofthereality.
