"Beatit,"repliedtheyoungDelawareattheelbowofthescout.
"Beatwhat,fool!—what!"exclaimedHawkeye,stillflourishingtheweaponangrilyabovehishead,thoughhiseyenolongersoughtthepersonofMagua.

Thescoutlaughedaloud—anoisethatproducedthestartlingeffectofanunnaturalsoundonHeyward;thendroppingthepieceheavilyintohisextendedlefthand,itwasdischarged,apparentlybytheshock,drivingthefragmentsofthevesselintotheair,andscatteringthemoneveryside.Almostatthesameinstant,therattlingsoundoftheriflewasheard,ashesufferedittofall,contemptuously,totheearth.
Thefirstimpressionofsostrangeascenewasengrossingadmiration.Thenalow,butincreasingmurmur,ranthroughthemultitude,andfinallyswelledintosoundsthatdenotedalivelyoppositioninthesentimentsofthespectators.Whilesomeopenlytestifiedtheirsatisfactionatsounexampleddexterity,byfarthelargerportionofthetribewereinclinedtobelievethesuccessoftheshotwastheresultofaccident.Heywardwasnotslowtoconfirmanopinionthatwassofavorabletohisownpretentions.
