Afterasuitableanddecentpause,theprincipalchiefsarose;andapproachingthepatriarch,theyplacedhishandsreverentlyontheirheads,seemingtoentreatablessing.Theyoungermenwerecontentwithtouchinghisrobe,orevendrawingnighhisperson,inordertobreatheintheatmosphereofonesoaged,sojust,andsovaliant.Nonebutthemostdistinguishedamongtheyouthfulwarriorsevenpresumedsofarastoperformthelatterceremony;thegreatmassofthemultitudedeemingitasufficienthappinesstolookuponaformsodeeplyvenerated,andsowellbeloved.Whentheseactsofaffectionandrespectwereperformed,thechiefsdrewbackagaintotheirseveralplaces,andsilencereignedinthewholeencampment.
Afterashortdelay,afewoftheyoungmen,towhominstructionshadbeenwhisperedbyoneoftheagedattendantsofTamenund,arose,leftthecrowd,andenteredthelodgewhichhasalreadybeennotedastheobjectofsomuchattentionthroughoutthatmorning.Inafewminutestheyreappeared,escortingtheindividualswhohadcausedallthesesolemnpreparationstowardstheseatofjudgment.Thecrowdopenedinalane;andwhenthepartyhadre-entered,itclosedinagain,formingalargeanddensebeltofhumanbodies,arrangedinanopencircle.
