TheinstantHawkeyefoundhimselfundertheobservationoftheHurons,hedrewuphistallformintherigidmannerofDavid,threwouthisarmintheactofkeepingtime,andcommencedwhatheintendedforanimitationofhispsalmody.Happilyforthesuccessofthisdelicateadventure,hehadtodealwithearsbutlittlepractisedintheconcordofsweetsounds,orthemiserableeffortwouldinfalliblyhavebeendetected.Itwasnecessarytopasswithinadangerousproximityofthedarkgroupofthesavages,andthevoiceofthescoutgrewlouderastheydrewnigher.Whenatthenearestpoint,theHuronwhospoketheEnglishthrustoutanarm,andstoppedthesupposedsinging-master.
