Notwithstandinghisrisingresentment,hisnaturalfirmness,andhisanxietyinbehalfofUncas,Heywardfeltsensiblyrelievedbytheabsenceofsodangerousandsosubtleafoe.Theexcitementproducedbythespeechgraduallysubsided.Thewarriorsresumedtheirseats,andcloudsofsmokeoncemorefilledthelodge.Fornearhalfanhour,notasyllablewasuttered,orscarcelyalookcastaside;agraveandmeditativesilencebeingtheordinarysuccessiontoeverysceneofviolenceandcommotionamongthosebeings,whowerealikesoimpetuousandyetsoself-restrained.
WhenthechiefwhohadsolicitedtheaidofDuncanfinishedhispipe,hemadeafinalandsuccessfulmovementtowardsdeparting.Amotionofafingerwastheintimationhegavethesupposedphysiciantofollow;andpassingthroughthecloudsofsmoke,Duncanwasglad,onmoreaccountsthanone,tobeable,atlast,tobreathethepureairofacoolandrefreshingsummerevening.
InsteadofpursuinghiswayamongthoselodgeswhereHeywardhadalreadymadehisunsuccessfulsearch,hiscompanionturnedaside,andproceededdirectlytowardsthebaseofanadjacentmountain,whichoverhungthetemporaryvillage.Athicketofbrushskirteditsfoot,anditbecamenecessarytoproceedthroughacrookedandnarrowpath.Theboyshadresumedtheirsportsintheclearing,andwereenactingamimicchasetothepostamongthemselves.
