           Thenative,likehimself,seemedoccupiedinconsideringthelowdwellingsofthevillage,andthestolenmovementsofitsinhabitants.Itwasimpossibletodiscovertheexpressionofhisfeatures,throughthegrotesquemaskofpaintunderwhichtheywereconcealed;thoughDuncanfancieditwasrathermelancholythansavage.Hisheadwasshaved,asusual,withtheexceptionofthecrown,fromwhosetuftthreeorfourfadedfeathersfromahawk’swingwerelooselydangling.Araggedcalicomantlehalf-encircledhisbody,whilehisnethergarmentwascomposedofanordinaryshirt,thesleevesofwhichweremadetoperformtheofficethatisusuallyexecutedbyamuchmorecommodiousarrangement.Hislegswerebare,andsadlycutandtornbybriers.Thefeetwere,however,coveredwithapairofgooddeer-skinmoccasins.Altogether,theappearanceoftheindividualwasforlornandmiserable.

           Hawkeyestarted,anddroppedhisrifle,directedbythefingerofhiscompanion,thestrangercameunderhisview.Thenloweringthedangerousmuzzle,hestretchedforwardhislongneck,asiftoassistascrutinythatwasalreadyintenselykeen.
