TheHuroninthebowsoftheleadingcanoehadrisenwithasimilarobject,andhenowfellbackward,sufferinghisguntoescapefromhishandsintothewater.Inaninstant,however,herecoveredhisfeet,thoughhisgestureswerewildandbewildered.Atthesamemomenthiscompanionssuspendedtheirefforts,andthechasingcanoesclusteredtogether,andbecamestationary.ChingachgookandUncasprofitedbytheintervaltoregaintheirwind,thoughDuncancontinuedtoworkwiththemostperseveringindustry.Thefatherandsonnowcastcalmbutinquiringglancesateachother,tolearnifeitherhadsustainedanyinjurybythefire;forbothwellknewthatnocryorexclamationwould,insuchamomentofnecessity,havebeenpermittedtobetraytheaccident.AfewlargedropsofbloodweretricklingdowntheshoulderoftheSagamore,who,whenheperceivedthattheeyesofUncasdwelttoolongonthesight,raisedsomewaterinthehollowofhishand,andwashingoffthestain,wascontenttomanifest,inthissimplemanner,theslightnessoftheinjury.
