Theysoonbegantoascend,butasthemotionhadatendencytorevivethedormantfacultiesofhersister,theattentionofCorawastoomuchdividedbetweenthetenderestsolicitudeinherbehalf,andinlisteningtothecrieswhichwerestilltooaudibleontheplain,tonotethedirectioninwhichtheyjourneyed.When,however,theygainedtheflattenedsurfaceofthemountain-top,andapproachedtheeasternprecipice,sherecognizedthespottowhichshehadoncebeforebeenledunderthemorefriendlyauspicesofthescout.HereMaguasufferedthemtodismount;and,notwithstandingtheirowncaptivity,thecuriositywhichseemsinseparablefromhorror,inducedthemtogazeatthesickeningsightbelow.
Thecruelworkwasstillunchecked.Oneverysidethecapturedwereflyingbeforetheirrelentlesspersecutors,whilethearmedcolumnsoftheChristiankingstoodfastinanapathywhichhasneverbeenexplained,andwhichhasleftanunmovableblotontheotherwisefairescutcheonoftheirleader.Norwastheswordofdeathstayeduntilcupiditygotthemasteryofrevenge.Then,indeed,theshrieksofthewoundedandtheyellsoftheirmurderersgrewlessfrequent,until,finally,thecriesofhorrorwerelosttotheirear,orweredrownedintheloud,long,andpiercingwhoopsofthetriumphantsavages.
