Butanarrowopeningbetweenthecrestsofthehillspointedoutthepassagebywhichtheyfoundtheirwaystillfarthernorth,tospreadtheirpureandamplesheetsagain,beforepouringouttheirtributeintothedistantChamplain.Tothesouthstretchedthedefile,orratherbrokenplain,sooftenmentioned.Forseveralmilesinthisdirection,themountainsappearedreluctanttoyieldtheirdominion,butwithinreachoftheeyetheydiverged,andfinallymeltedintothelevelandsandylands,acrosswhichwehaveaccompaniedouradventurersintheirdoublejourney.Alongbothrangesofhills,whichboundedtheoppositesidesofthelakeandvalley,cloudsoflightvaporwererisinginspiralwreathsfromtheuninhabitedwoods,lookinglikethesmokesofhiddencottages;orrolledlazilydownthedeclivities,tominglewiththefogsofthelowerland.Asingle,solitary,snow-whitecloudfloatedabovethevalley,andmarkedthespotbeneathwhichlaythesilentpoolofthe"bloodypond."
Directlyontheshoreofthelake,andnearertoitswesternthantoitseasternmargin,laytheextensiveearthenrampartsandlowbuildingsofWilliamHenry.Twoofthesweepingbastionsappearedtorestonthewaterwhichwashedtheirbases,whileadeepditchandextensivemorassesguardeditsothersidesandangles.
