Thesechildrenofthewoodsstoodtogetherforseveralmomentspointingatthecrumblingedifice,andconversingintheunintelligiblelanguageoftheirtribe.Theythenapproached,thoughwithslowandcautioussteps,pausingeveryinstanttolookatthebuilding,likestartleddeer,whosecuriositystruggledpowerfullywiththeirawakenedapprehensionsforthemastery.Thefootofoneofthemsuddenlyrestedonthemound,andhestoopedtoexamineitsnature.Atthismoment,Heywardobservedthatthescoutloosenedhisknifeinhissheath,andloweredthemuzzleofhisrifle.Imitatingthesemovements,theyoungmanpreparedhimselfforthestruggle,whichnowseemedinevitable.
