Exertinghisrenovatedpowerstotheirutmost,hewasyetfillingthearchesofthecavewithlongandfulltones,whenayellburstintotheairwithout,thatinstantlystilledhispiousstrains,chokinghisvoicesuddenly,asthoughhishearthadliterallyboundedintothepassageofhisthroat.
"Wearelost!"exclaimedAlice,throwingherselfintothearmsofCora.
"Notyet,notyet,"returnedtheagitatedbutundauntedHeyward;"thesoundcamefromthecentreoftheisland,andithasbeenproducedbythesightoftheirdeadcompanions.Wearenotyetdiscovered,andthereisstillhope."

Thesoundsquicklyspreadaroundthemineverydirection.Somecalledtotheirfellowsfromthewater’sedge,andwereansweredfromtheheightsabove.Crieswereheardinthestartlingvicinityofthechasmbetweenthetwocaves,whichmingledwithhoarseryellsthataroseoutoftheabyssofthedeepravine.
