Everysuccessivestrugglebroughtthemnearertotheverge,whereDuncanperceivedthefinalandconqueringeffortmustbemade.Eachofthecombatantsthrewallhisenergiesintothateffort,andtheresultwas,thatbothtotteredonthebrinkoftheprecipice.Heywardfeltthegraspoftheotherathisthroat,andsawthegrimsmilethesavagegave,undertherevengefulhopethathehurriedhisenemytoafatesimilartohisown,ashefelthisbodyslowlyyieldingtoaresistlesspower,andtheyoungmanexperiencedthepassingagonyofsuchamomentinallitshorrors.Atthatinstantofextremedanger,adarkhandandglancingknifeappearedbeforehim;theIndianreleasedhishold,asthebloodflowedfreelyfromaroundtheseveraltendonsofthewrist;andwhileDuncanwasdrawnbackwardbythesavingarmofUncas,hischarmedeyeswerestillrivetedonthefierceanddisappointedcountenanceofhisfoe,whofellsullenlyanddisappointeddowntheirrecoverableprecipice.
"Tocover!tocover!"criedHawkeye,whojustthenhaddespatchedtheenemy;"tocover,foryourlives!theworkisbuthalfended!"
TheyoungMohicangaveashoutoftriumph,and,followedbyDuncan,heglideduptheacclivitytheyhaddescendedtothecombat,andsoughtthefriendlyshelteroftherocksandshrubs.
