WhenIwaswaked,ittookmeseveralsecondstogetbackmythoughtssoastorecognisemyownidentityandsurroundings.Theshortsleephad,however,donemegood,andIcouldlookonthingsaroundmeinamorepracticallightthanIhadbeenabletodoearlierintheevening.Ibathedmyface,andthusrefreshedwentintothesick-room.Imovedverysoftly.TheNursewassittingbythebed,quietandalert;theDetectivesatinanarm-chairacrosstheroomindeepshadow.HedidnotmovewhenIcrossed,untilIgotclosetohim,whenhesaidinadullwhisper:
"Itisallright;Ihavenotbeenasleep!"Anunnecessarythingtosay,Ithought—italwaysis,unlessitbeuntrueinspirit.WhenItoldhimthathiswatchwasover;thathemightgotobedtillIshouldcallhimatsixo’clock,heseemedrelievedandwentwithalacrity.Atthedoorheturnedand,comingbacktome,saidinawhisper:
"IsleeplightlyandIshallhavemypistolswithme.Iwon’tfeelsoheavy-headedwhenIgetoutofthismummysmell.
