Well,itallhappenedjustasshehoped,forPeterfoundtheletter,andofcoursenothingcouldbeeasierforthefairiesthantoturnthegoatintoarealone,andsothatishowPetergotthegoatonwhichhenowridesroundtheGardenseverynightplayingsublimelyonhispipe.AndMaimiekeptherpromise,andneverfrightenedTonywithagoatagain,thoughIhaveheardthatshecreatedanotheranimal.UntilshewasquiteabiggirlshecontinuedtoleavepresentsforPeterintheGardens(withlettersexplaininghowhumansplaywiththem),andsheisnottheonlyonewhohasdonethis.Daviddoesit,forinstance,andheandIknowthelikeliestplaceforleavingthemin,andweshalltellyouifyoulike,butformercy’ssakedon’taskusbeforePorthos,forheissofondoftoysthat,werehetofindouttheplace,hewouldtakeeveryoneofthem.
ThoughPeterstillremembersMaimieheisbecomeasgayasever,andofteninsheerhappinesshejumpsoffhisgoatandlieskickingmerrilyonthegrass.Oh,hehasajoyfultime!Buthehasstillavaguememorythathewasahumanonce,anditmakeshimespeciallykindtothehouse-swallowswhentheyvisittheisland,forhouse-swallowsarethespiritsoflittlechildrenwhohavedied.Theyalwaysbuildintheeavesofthehouseswheretheylivedwhentheywerehumans,andsometimestheytrytoflyinatanurserywindow,andperhapsthatiswhyPeterlovesthembestofallthebirds.
Andthelittlehouse?Everylawfulnight(thatistosay,everynightexceptballnights)thefairiesnowbuildthelittlehouselestthereshouldbeahumanchildlostintheGardens,andPeterridesthemarcheslookingforlostones,andifhefindsthemhecarriesthemonhisgoattothelittlehouse,andwhentheywakeuptheyareinit,andwhentheystepouttheyseeit.Thefairiesbuildthehousemerelybecauseitissopretty,butPeterridesroundinmemoryofMaimie,andbecausehestilllovestodojustashebelievesrealboyswoulddo.
